TRESA watched the Pys fly through the sky, attacking Garce at random. Five of them still, and she studied their movements, wishing she had their wings. Or their ability to throw their attacks. They were unstoppable, powerful, faster than the eye could follow, and so beautiful.

And yet, the Garce could kill them. She’d seen it happen when Pys were trapped in the dark with no escape. They were each other’s only weakness, and she was made of both.

Well, that wasn’t entirely true. When the sun rose and the Pys shrieked and flew away, she remembered their other weakness and the only thing that saved her humans.

The sun.

She heard Roman stir, heard his heartbeat speed up long before he opened his eyes. She was hyper-aware of every movement he made, every breath he took. So when he paused right behind her, so close she could feel his warmth through her thin flannel shirt, she wasn’t surprised. “Hey. Ready for training?”

She turned from the slot in the board, away from the sunlight, and her eyes took several seconds to adjust to the dim interior. “What?”

He grinned. “Since you won’t sleep to recharge, we’ve gotta make you more powerful, right?”

“What?” she said again, flatly. This didn’t sound like it would be fun for her at all.

“Remember a while ago, we agreed that you would work out in here where it’s safe, learn to control your powers and slowly strengthen them? I compared it to training for softball, which you’ve clearly done many times before?”

“I vaguely recall.”

“Well, let’s get to it.”

“Don’t we have more hunting to do? More scavenging? We didn’t hit most of our targets on our mission last week. What about the plan, Roman?”

“We’re set on supplies for several weeks now, thanks to our little field trip and the traders. They had more than enough for the eight of them. I think they’ve been scavenging from the people they took. Which reminds me. If you have your heart set on venturing back into the danger zone, we do need to see what the traders your dad killed left behind. No one’s been to that building yet.”

She nodded. “And the first traders I — I attacked. I didn’t gather their stuff, either.”

“Perfect. Let’s get started. I was thinking we could work on your zipping first —“

“Roman, I haven’t even had breakfast yet. I might just strangle you if you don’t shut up.”

Roman laughed, startling several of the others who were just stirring in their beds. They looked at him like he’d been body-swapped in the night, but he didn’t seem to notice. “Fine. Eat, whatever. Then we’ll get started. Everyone else,” he turned, the smile dying on his face. “We’ve got work to do. Get up already or you can go sleep outside with the Garce.”

Nope. Definitely not body-swapped in the night.
